The August 8th elections are coming up and here is a list of the candidates and proposals that you need to know about before you vote in the Washtenaw and Wayne County elections:


City council members along with the Mayor are local legislators that are voted in by the citizens. The mayor leads the city council and as Council Members they perform the following duties of setting policies, codes, and ordinances for the city. Along with having the ability to approve spending and budgets for the city.

Washtenaw County- Candidates


The City of Milan is holding votes for City Council Member, this position is a four year term. You will be able to vote for no more than three candidates.

Washtenaw County- Proposal

In Northfield Township on August 8,2023 those that reside within that township will have the ability to vote for the “Police Protection Millage Renewal and Increase Proposal”. This proposal will give the township the ability to impose a 5.425 mills to fund police protection in Northfield Township for 5 yrs beginning in December 2023, adjusted annually due to the Headlee Amendment. In total the police department would receive about $2,430,436.00 in just the first year if the mileage is raised.

Wayne County- Candidates

In Wayne county there are various positions to vote for in the following cites: Dearborn Heights, Grosse Pointe Park, Hamtramck, Inkster, Melvindale, Rearview, Rockwood, Westland. Here is an unofficial list of all of the candidates in Wayne County  that you need to know before you vote in the August 8, 2023 primary election.


Dearborn HeightsThe City of Dearborn Heights is holding votes for City Council Members, this position is a four year term. There are currently three positions up for election.  Here are the candidates:

Wayne County- Proposals

  • Proposal 2023-1: The City of Riverview Proposal 2023-1 is to initiate legislation according to the Section 6 of the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act. This proposal would put a temporary ban on the sale of recreational marihuana, void Riverview’s cannabis license ordinance, disallow the granting or regulation of recreational marihuana facilities.
  • Sinking Fund Ballot Proposition: Hamtramck Public Schools is presenting a sinking fund ballot proposition by levying or increasing 3 mills on property taxes for all properties within the school district for a 10 year period. These funds will be used for the construction or repair of school buildings and other purposes authorized by law. By 2024 if the millage is approved and levied it will total $760,000. This proposal is a renewal from 2014 that will expire this year in 2023. 
  • Grosse Ile Township has three proposal up for vote to renew various Millage’s that were previously proposed under Article IX, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution in Grosse IIe Township:
    • Millage Renewal for Continuing Off Island Library Services:  Millage Renewal for Continuing Off Island Library Services, with the mileage roll back this proposal will be renewed at .3209 mills and increased for 5 years until 2027 to raise an estimate of $235,000 in the first upon approval.
    • Millage Renewal to Improve and Maintain Drain and Storm Water Management Projects: The millage renewal of .33 mills will be reduced to .3209 mills to be renewed and levied for the next five 5 years until 2027. The estimated fund will be $235,000 in the first year of the millage if approved. It is to be used for projects pertaining to the maintenance and improvement of the drainage and stormwater management. 

Millage Renewal to Maintain Current Police Department Operations: Proposing to renew the millage of .75 that will be reduced to .7296 and levied for the next 5 years. These funds will go to the Police Department, in the first year it will raise about $534,000 in the first year if approved.
