5th Annual Ypsilanti Area Juneteenth Celebration
The Elbert Williams Voting Corner is excited to be part of the Ypsilanti Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 21—a day that honors Black freedom, resilience, and the ongoing fight for justice.
As we gather to celebrate emancipation and community, we also uplift the legacy of Elbert Williams, one of the first known martyrs of the modern civil rights movement. Williams was killed in 1940 for daring to organize Black citizens to register to vote in Brownsville, Tennessee. Today, his legacy lives on through civic engagement efforts that connect the past to the present.
At our booth, community members can:
- Register to vote or update their information
- View resources on local elections and civic participation
- Learn about Elbert Williams and the history of voter suppression
- Share their own stories of activism and hope
- Get free giveaways and educational materials
- Learn about some of our current ACTION items
This year’s Juneteenth theme—freedom, family, and future—aligns perfectly with our mission. We believe that celebrating Juneteenth also means continuing the work of ensuring every voice is heard and every vote counts.

Leslie McGraw
Leslie discovered the power of the pen in the third grade after her family moved to a new school district. Writing became a way to sort out her new surroundings and escape to fantasy landscapes. That child, and voice, has matured into a poet, writer, blogger, journalist, online content creator and editor. Leslie is a social entrepreneur with a demonstrated commitment to community. She is an active community member in Washtenaw County (Michigan) with expertise in social media marketing and content management systems, volunteer coordination and writing and 19 years of experience in the areas of online community management, training, leadership development, and social networking. She is interested in facilitating connection with both community residents and businesses. Through this work, the economy of the community is improved and the organizations are financially successful. Her main mode of advocacy and online community, however, is through writing.
