As temperatures soar this summer, it’s more important than ever to protect ourselves and our communities from dangerous heat. Extreme heat isn’t just uncomfortable—it can be deadly, especially for children, older adults, people with chronic health conditions, and those without stable housing.
At Elbert Williams Voting Corner, we believe in keeping our communities safe and informed. That’s why we’re sharing these vital tips and resources for navigating dangerously hot days.
? Cooling Sites in Washtenaw County – June 22–24, 2025
Open Daily from 9 AM – 9 PM

If you or someone you know doesn’t have access to air conditioning, these sites are free, public, and safe places to cool off.
? Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke
Heat-related illnesses can come on quickly. Knowing the symptoms could save a life.
Heat Exhaustion
Symptoms: Dizziness, heavy sweating, nausea, thirst, and weakness
What to do:
Move to a cooler area
Loosen clothing
Sip cool water
Seek medical attention if symptoms persist
Heat Stroke (Medical Emergency!)
Symptoms: Confusion, dizziness, unconsciousness
What to do:
Call 911 immediately
Move the person to a cooler area
Loosen or remove extra layers
Cool with water or ice
Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment isn’t provided.

Whether you’re organizing, voting, or just trying to get through your day, no action can be taken without good health and safety. Protecting your well-being is an act of resistance.
? Drink plenty of water
? Check on neighbors and elders
? Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours (11am–4pm)
? Never leave kids or pets in cars
? Stay informed through local alerts and cooling center updates
